Did you know? The Lighthouse was destroyed by the 1846 Great Havana Hurricane.

The 1846 Hurricane carried the original Lighthouse out to sea, along with 14 souls that sought shelter from the storm within it. Key West suffered unbelievable damage.

You can read (in the book pictured right) about the history of the Key West Lighthouse, (which was built in 1826 to help reduce shipwrecks and aid navigation); the lighthouse keepers through the years; historical photographs, and many little known facts.

The New Key West Lighthouse that exists today was completed in the late 1840's.

Ernest Hemingway was to have claimed he chose the location of the Hemingway Home because he could see the Lighthouse from anywhere in Key West and reasoned that he would never get lost, no matter how inebriated he was.

Is the story true? You decide. His wife Pauline's rich Uncle Gus paid for it. Not Mr. Hemingway.

The Lighthouse is across the street from the Hemingway Home and Museum. Worth Checking out!
